Sri Poyyatha Vinayagar Moorthy Temple was built in 1781. It is the oldest Hindu temple in Malaysia and is one of the UNESCO World Heritage Sites. This temple is 230 years old and is located in the heart of the city of Melaka on Jalan Tukang Emas. The temple is located one street away from Cheng Hoon Teng Temple and Kampung Kling Mosque.
Vinayagar carries the meaning of God the barrier and also the Remover of obstacles. When someone does bad things or when the time is not right, Vinayar will put obstacles in our way. When we take the right path, Vinayagar removes our problems.
The temple was built on land donated by Captain Thaivanayagam Chitty who was the head of the community there so that the Indians could practice their religion especially in honor of the Vinayagar / Ganesha God, the god with the elephant’s head, the man’s body, and the four arms.
There are many designs of colorful and luxurious stone carvings as well as Hindu animal figures and gods in this temple. There is a black stone statue of Vinayagar on the central altar. The altar next to Vinayagar is dedicated to the father, mother, and younger brother of the god Lord Muruga. Many interesting events that are often done at this temple include Hindu festivals such as Datuk Chachar Festival and Dewa Muruga Festival.
